孔子先生は、親の存命中は遠方への旅行はさけるべきだとおっしゃいます。
もし行く場合には行方を明らかにすべきであると。
二つのことを思います。
まず、孔子先生の時代には遠方への旅行は大きなリスクを伴い、また旅先で行方を明らかにすることも場合によっては簡単ではなかったであろうから、親の心配も今よりずっと大きかったであろうこと。
もうひとつは、孔子先生は早くに両親を失い、自らを「東西南北の人」、つまり放浪者であるとし、亡命していた時期もありました。先生にとっては両親の傍にいるために遠方への旅行はしない生活は憧れであったかもしれません。
“Do Not Cause Your Parents Worry”
Confucius advises that while our parents are still alive, we should avoid traveling far from home. And if we must travel, we should ensure our whereabouts are known to them.
This brings to mind two things.
First, in Confucius’ time, traveling to distant places was a significant risk. Furthermore, in some cases, it wouldn’t have been easy to let others know your whereabouts, which would have caused your parents even greater concern than we experience today.
Another point is that Confucius lost his parents at a young age and described himself as a “man of the East, West, North, and South”—a wanderer, who even lived in exile for a time. For him, the idea of living a life where he didn’t have to travel far to stay close to his parents might have been something he longed for.
漢文と書き下し文
子曰、父母在、不遠遊。遊必有方。
子（し）曰（いわ）く、父母（ふぼ）在（いま）せば、遠（とお）く遊（あそ）ばず。遊（あそ）べば必（かなら）ず方（ほう）有（あ）り。
現代語訳
孔子先生はこのようにおっしゃった。「両親の存命中には、遠方への旅行は避ける。もし遠方へ行く場合には、必ず行方を知らせる。」

- 遠（とお）く遊（あそ）ぶ：遠くへ遊びに行く、遠方への旅行に行く
- 方（ほう）：方角、「方（ほう）有（あ）り」は行方を知らす
