Learning means studying the classics; practice means putting what one has learned into action. Wholeheartedness is living with genuine sincerity, and trustworthiness is being honest in word and deed. By training oneself to approach everything with true sincerity, one becomes, if not perfectly accurate, at least not far off the mark—and one’s trustworthiness deepens.

子以四教。文行忠信。
子（し）四（し）を以（もっ）て教（おし）う。文（ぶん）・行（こう）・忠（ちゅう）・信（しん）。
現代語訳
孔子先生の教えには四つの要点があった。古典を読んで学ぶこと、学びを実践すること、真心で生きること、言行に嘘いつわりのないこと。
解説
- 文（ぶん）：学問、古典のこと。文は「文身（ぶんしん）」で刺青の意味。古代では刺青で邪気を払ったが、今では学んで嫌なことを避ける。
- 行（こう）：実行
- 忠（ちゅう）：まっすぐで偏らない心。真心。
- 信（しん）：信頼、嘘をつかない誠実さ。言行に嘘偽りがないこと。
