孔子先生は、普段は出身地魯の方言でお話をされていました。しかし詩経や書経についてお話されるとき、また儀式を執り行うときには雅言（がげん）と言われる伝統的な標準語でお話され、格式を示されました。祝詞のように神に通ずる言葉がみやびな言葉、雅言です。古典を伝え、礼の厳粛さを保つために場にふさわしい言葉を択ばれていたのですね。
Respecting Tradition and Speaking Words that Reach the Gods
Confucius ordinarily spoke in the dialect of his native state of Lu. However, when he discussed the Book of Songs or the Book of Documents, or when he conducted rituals, he used the traditional standard language known as “elegant speech” (yáyán) to convey proper dignity. Elegant speech was a refined register believed to reach the gods, much like ritual prayers. By choosing language appropriate to each occasion, he preserved the tradition of the classics and upheld the solemnity of ritual.

子所雅言、詩書。執禮皆雅言也。
子（し）の雅言（がげん）する所（ところ）は、詩（し）・書（しょ）。執礼（しつれい）は皆（みな）雅言（がげん）なり。
現代語訳
孔子先生は詩経と書経を語る時にには、雅な言葉を用いられた。また儀式で礼を執り行うときにもすべて雅な言葉でなさった。
