Interpreting Without Creating, Trusting and Loving the Wisdom of the Past
Confucius said that he devoted himself to interpreting and handing down the ancient classics, not to creating new ideas. He placed his trust in the wisdom of the classics and studied them with deep sympathy and insight. From this passage, we can also appreciate the significance of Confucius’ role in bringing together and systematizing the classical tradition.

子曰、述而不作。信而好古。竊比於我老彭。
子（し）曰（いわ）く、述（の）べて作（つく）らず。信（しん）じて古（いにしえ）を好（この）む。窃（ひそ）かに我（われ）を老彭（ろうほう）に比（ひ）す。
現代語訳
孔子先生はこのようにおっしゃった。「私は述べ伝えるが創作はしない。古典を信じ、好んでいる。心の中で自分を古の賢人とひきくらべている。」
