孔子先生は、家から外に出るときに玄関のドアを通らない人はいないのに、世の中に出るときにはなぜ、人として守るべき道を通らないのか、と嘆かれています。特定の弟子への叱責ではなく、社会全般の乱れを言われています。人として守るべき仁義礼智信の徳目を守らないことは、家から外に出るのに玄関を通らないくらい不自然な生き方だよと警鐘を鳴らしています。
To Make One’s Way in the World, Walk the Path of Humanity
Confucius lamented: “When leaving one’s house, no one fails to pass through the front door. So why, when going out into the world, do people fail to follow the proper path of humanity?”
He was not rebuking a particular disciple, but pointing to the disorder of society as a whole. He warned that neglecting the virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and faith is as unnatural as trying to leave a house without passing through its front door.

子曰、誰能出不由戶。何莫由斯道也。
子（し）曰（いわ）く、誰（たれ）か能（よ）く出（い）づるに戸（こ）に由（よ）らざらん。何（なん）ぞ斯（こ）の道（みち）に由（よ）ること莫（な）きやと。
現代語訳
家から外に出るとき、玄関の扉を通らずに出る人はいないだろう。それなのに、なぜ（それと同じように世の中に出るときに）人として守るべき道を通ってゆかないのか。
解説
- 戸（こ）：戸、扉
- 何（なん）ぞ～莫（な）きや：どうして～しないのだろう
- 斯（こ）の道（みち）：人道。人として守り行うべき道。
