師を同じくする人が朋。志を同じくする人は友。
一緒に学べる人はたくさんいても、そこから学びを活かすというプロセスまで一緒にできる人は得難いね、と先生はおっしゃいます。さらに、いたとしても、その学びから信念を確立させて実際に行動するところまでは、なかなか一緒にできる人はいない。いたとしても、それで本当に現実の複雑な問題に対峙して一緒に活動できる人はさらに得難いと。
これが先生の考える理想の朋友。こうした友をひとりでも、ふたりでも持ちたいですね。
The Rare Gift of One or Two True Friends
Those who share the same teacher are companions; those who share the same aspirations are friends.
“Even if there are many people you can study with,” the teacher says, “it is rare to find someone who can also go through the process of putting that learning into practice together.” Furthermore, even if such a person exists, it is rare to find someone who can go all the way from building a conviction based on that learning to actually taking action. And even if that person exists, it is rarer still to find someone who can truly face the complex problems of real life and work on them together.
This is the teacher’s idea of an ideal friendship. What a rare gift it would be to have even one or two friends like this.

子曰、可與共學、未可與適道。可與適道、未可與立。可與立、未可與權。
子（し）曰（いわ）く、与（とも）に学（まな）ぶ可（べ）きも、未（いま）だ与（とも）に道（みち）に適（ゆ）く可（べ）からず。与（とも）に道（みち）に適（ゆ）く可（べ）きも、未（いま）だ与（とも）に立（た）つ可（べ）からず。与（とも）に立（た）つ可（べ）きも、未（いま）だ与（とも）に権（はか）る可（べ）からず。
現代語訳
先生はこのようにおっしゃった。共に学ぶことができる人は多くても、同じ道を歩み、学びを活かすプロセスもいっしょにやろうという人はなかなか得難い。たとえいたとしても、一緒に確固たる信念にもとづいて行動しようという人はなかなかいない。いたとしても、それで本当に現実の諸問題に対峙して一緒に世を直そうという人はなかなかいない。
