先生は「知者は迷わない。仁者は憂えない。勇者は恐れない」とおっしゃいます。
人間の社会には二つのルールがあります。一つは人間がつくった法律で、これは変わります。もうひとつは論語に記された歴史と伝統の中で培われた「道理」で、これをよく知ることが重要です。
道理に基づいて判断する知者は迷わない。同時代を生きるものたちに幸せになって欲しいと願う心を持つのが仁者。私欲はないから憂えない。道理に基づいて正しいことを実践している勇者は、恐れるものがない。精神的な勇気は冷静さを保ちきること。自分の中にこうした三つの要素を育んでゆくことが、先生の教える自己修養です。
The Wise Are Not Perplexed, the Benevolent Are Not Worried, the Brave Are Not Afraid
The Master says, “The wise are not perplexed. The benevolent are not worried. The brave are not afraid.”
There are two kinds of rules in human society. One is man-made law, which changes over time. The other is the “principle” cultivated through history and tradition, as recorded in the Analects — and it is this that is important to understand deeply.
The wise, who make judgments based on principle, do not lose their way. The benevolent are those who carry in their hearts a genuine wish for the happiness of all who share their time on earth. Having no selfish desires, they are free from worry. The brave, who act rightly based on principle, have nothing to fear. Spiritual courage means keeping one’s composure steadfastly. Nurturing these three qualities within oneself is the practice of self-cultivation that the Master teaches.

子曰、知者不惑、仁者不憂、勇者不懼。
子（し）曰（いわ）く、知者（ちしゃ）は惑（まど）わず。仁者（じんしゃ）は憂（うれ）えず。勇者（ゆうしゃ）は懼（おそ）れず。
現代語訳
先生はこのようにおっしゃった。知者は迷わない。仁者は憂えない。勇者は恐れない。
解説
- 知者（ちしゃ）：物事の道理をわきまえた人
- 惑（まど）わず：道理をわきまえているから、判断に迷わない
- 仁者（じんしゃ）：仁の心、人を思いやる心を持つ人
- 憂（うれ）えず：私欲がないから憂えない
- 勇者（ゆうしゃ）：道理に従った行動をする勇気のある人
- 懼（おそ）れず：正しい行いをしているから、恐れるものがない。精神的な勇気は冷静さをたもちきること。
