Explain the Process and Reasons Behind the Conclusion
Confucius taught that when seeking understanding from the general public, one must clearly explain not only the outcome of a matter but also the reasons and background that led to that conclusion. Without that, simply conveying the information makes it difficult to communicate one’s intent.

子曰、民可使由之。不可使知之。 子（し）曰（いわ）く、民（たみ）は之（これ）に由（よ）らしむ可（べ）し。之（これ）を知（し）らしむ可（べ）からず。
現代語訳
民にものごとを説明するときには、なぜそういう結論になったのか、結果だけでなく理由をしっかり話す必要がある。そうでないと、ただ知らせるということで意図を伝えることは難しい。
解説
- 由（よ）らしむ可（べ）し：由は物事が起こった理由、わけ。理由をしっかり話す必要がある。なぜそういう結論になったのか、結果だけでなく理由を話す。
- 知（し）らしむ可（べ）からず：知らしめる、意図を伝えるのは難しい。
