孔子先生は社会に道義が行われないことを嘆いています。本来、角ばっているべき礼拝用のさかずきに角がなければ礼拝用のさかずきとは言えないことを、道理・道義の通らない政治では本来あるべき人間社会ではないことの喩えとして言われています。
Holding to the Essence
Confucius lamented that society was bereft of moral principles. He likened it to a ritual vessel, which, if not square as it ought to be, cannot rightly be called a ritual vessel. In the same way, politics lacking reason and morality cannot give rise to a true human society.
漢文と書き下し文
子曰、觚不觚。觚哉、觚哉。
子（し）曰（いわ）く、觚（こ）、觚（こ）ならず。觚（こ）ならんや、觚（こ）ならんや。
現代語訳
孔子先生はこのようにおっしゃった。「本来、角のあるべき礼拝用のさかずきに角がない。それで礼拝用のさかずきといえるだろうか。それで礼拝用のさかずきといえるだろうか。」
